- Kinu's stated aim for Santana's design was to make a black male character who was also the most handsome in the cast. It was not a common approach in 1995.
- As is highlighted by him doing the "Yes I am!" pose in his official illustration, his design is mainly based on Muhammad Avdol from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. His name may come from a certain Pillar Man as well, though his hair most resembles Kars's.
