Resident Evil 2, known in Japan as Biohazard RE:2 (バイオハザード RE:2 Baiohazādo RE:2?) is an upcoming survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. A remake of Resident Evil 2 (1998), it follows rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy and student Claire Redfield as they attempt to escape from Raccoon City during a zombie apocalypse. It is scheduled to be released worldwide for the PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One on January 25, 2019.

Gameplay

Unlike the original Resident Evil 2, which uses tank controls and fixed camera angles, the remake will feature "over-the-shoulder" third-person shooter gameplay similar to Resident Evil 4.[1]

Story

The remake stays true to the original's plot. However, it no longer uses the "zapping" system to provide the "A" story and "B" story – two separate paths through the original game that had the same major story elements for each character, but changed certain details, events, and access to items depending on which character the players used first.[2]

Development

In 2008, Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi, who had previously worked on the series as weapons designer and graphics animator, alluded to the possibility of a full-fledged remake of Resident Evil 2 (1998).[3][4][5] Such a project had already been considered for the GameCube in 2002, but Shinji Mikami abandoned the idea as he did not want to delay the in-development Resident Evil 4.[6]

In August 2015, Capcom announced that a remake of Resident Evil 2 was in development.[7] No further details were released until E3 2018, when Capcom revealed a trailer and showed gameplay footage.[8][9] The game is scheduled for worldwide release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows on January 25, 2019. It uses the RE Engine, the same game engine first used for Resident Evil 7.[10] The game supports enhancements on the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, offering either 4K resolution or 60 frames per second.[11]

Reception

Following the E3 showing, Resident Evil 2 was voted "Best of Show" at the 2018 Game Critics Awards.[12]
