Ryu Hadoken

Artwork of Ryu using Hadoken.

The Hadoken (波動拳, hadouken, "Surge Fist", a Japanese neologism, also "Wave Motion Fist"), also sometimes spelled as Hadouken, is a special attack that originated in the classic Capcom fighting video game series, Street Fighter. The practitioner thrusts his or her palms forward, sending a surge of spirit energy (or ki) flying towards the opponent.

The Hadoken is considered one of the series' most famous attacks, alongside others such as the Shoryuken and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, and has received a large amount of parodies and references in media. The Hadoken itself is often featured in the intros of various Street Fighter games, usually at the end, the trend starting from as early as Super Street Fighter II to the recent Super Street Fighter IV.

Description[]

The basic type of Hadoken is a surging punch in which a fighter's willpower is utilized to focus energy into and through the palms. As the palms are thrust outwards towards the target, a surging energy wave is expelled that results in a punching force traveling through the air in the opponent's direction. In some games, the projectile will have actual "energy hands" inside it. According to the Street Fighter II Official Fanbook, the Hadoken is said to be as warm as normal body temperature, contrary to popular belief that it is a fireball. Depending on its practitioner as well, its force of impact varies; Ryu's Hadoken is said to feel like a hard kick and its pain lingers, while Ken's is said to be like a hard punch but is brief in pain.

The user will usually be immobilized for a short time after performing this move, leaving them vulnerable to counterattack. Certain crossovers allow the basic Hadoken to be used in midair.

Different types of Hadokens[]

Hadoken[]

Hadouken (Surge Fist) - Thrusting his palms forward, Ryu releases a blue ki projectile (that closely resembles a fireball) towards his opponent. Can be used in midair, but flies straight forward like on ground.

Gohadoken[]

[7]Gohadoken (Great Surge Fist) – A more powerful version of the Hadoken used by Akuma, Gouken and Oni. Gouken's version is written with the kanji '剛' instead of '豪', changing the meaning to "Strong Surge Fist."

In the storyline, this Hadoken is a life-threatening technique (though not as potent as the Gohadoken used by Akuma, or some of the more powerful moves in that tier), but the lethality of the Gohadoken is increased whenever the Satsui no Hado is being embraced. The gauge of the Gohadoken depends on how attuned the user is to the Chikara no Hado or the Satsui no Hado.

Zanku Hadoken[]

Zanku Hadoken (Air Slashing Spirit Surge Fist) is an aerial version of a regular Hadoken that Akuma and Ken can use. The technique and essential purpose is similar to that of a regular Hadoken, to the point of the button input, only airborne, and angled down. The Zankuu is great for stopping close up foe's chances of countering Akuma and Ken while in the air, or assaulting ground foes. The angle is usually about 45° downwards, and the speed at which the fireballs fall depends on the strength of the punch button pressed, the weakest going slower, while the stronger falling faster.

Cyber-Akuma also recovers very quickly from this attack.

Shinku Hadoken[]

Shinkuu Hadouken (Vacuum Surge Fist) - A super powered version of the Hadouken that by definition is a massive beam of blue ki that hits multiple times. In Marvel vs Capcom 3, Ryu can aim this attack straight up from the ground, and downward from the air by holding up or down during the startup of the attack, and move the beam up or down during the attack. In Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, this attack can now reflect off the walls and floors during his new Super Mode hyper.

Ken is also capable of performing this move, but only in X-Men vs Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, only if he is partnered with Ryu and if they execute a Crossover Combination Hyper. They will perform a Double Shinku Hadoken which does more hits and more damage.
