Ginzu

Ginzu the Ninja (Shō, 翔, in Japan), known as the Ninja Commando in the character select screen, is a character from the game Captain Commando. Ginzu is a member of the Commando Team and a highly trained ninja, successor to Bushin-ryu Ninpo (武神流忍術), a fictional fighting style based on Bushin Ninjutsu.

Name origin

Ginzu the Ninja, his English name, comes from the Ginsu kitchen knives which were introduced in the 1970's and were made famous later by its TV advertising campaign, where they were said to cut through most anything. This explains why his signature line is "I'll slice 'em! I'll dice 'em!" in some versions of the arcade game. His Japanese name, Sho, is based on Sho Kosugi, who is a Japanese actor known for his portrayals of ninjas in various movies in the 1980's.

Power and abilities

His razor-sharp sword is capable of cutting an opponent in two. His Special Move is "Smoke Bomb" (スモークボム), a sure-killing technique. After creating a smoke screen around his body, the smoke explodes, killing enemies that are adjacent. His Dash Attacks are "Iaizuki" (居合い突き, roughly "iai thrust") and "Flying Katana" (上段ジャンプ斬り, roughly "Upper Tier Jump Kill"). Iaizuki pierces several enemies at once. Flying Katana cuts the enemies from above while jumping. Ginzu can also grab his opponents and either kick their stomachs or do a shoulder or overhead throw.

Other things he is equipped with are his "Ninja Eyes", his "Servant Sword" and his "Ninja Suit". His Ninja Eye can support him in picking out enemies 500 meters ahead in pitch dark. His Servant Sword serves no one but him. Named "Lightning Light," his Servant Sword cuts things at atomic levels. Ginzu's "Ninja Suit" is tougher than iron, yet softer than silk.

In Marvel vs. Capcom, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Namco × Capcom, the four members of Commando Team combined can use the attacks "Captain Storm" and "Captain Sword". In Namco × Capcom, Ginzu uses the Smoke Bomb and Iaizuki as normal attacks. In Guy's "Bushin Musou Renka" (武神無双連刈), Ginzu and Guy attack the enemy multiple times.

Other appearances

Ginzu also appeared as a playable character in Namco X Capcom teamed up with Guy, a character with the same fighting style. He has also minor appearances in the quiz game Capcom World 2, in the background of Ken's stage in Street Fighter Alpha 2, in the SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters series, and in Captain Commando's attacks from Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes and Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes.
