In most promotional artworks and CGI appearances, Ethan is depicted not to shown his real face. He has neatly short pale brown hair and brown eyes after his real face was briefly shown.
In Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, he is seen wearing a white long sleeved loose button shirt, light brown pants and black shoes.
In Resident Evil: Village, his short pale brown hair is now slicked back in a gel with dishieveled spikes downward and the lighting effect depicts him being dark blonde. His skin is also pale, revealing that he is living by the Mold after being killed by Jack Baker on his playable debut and was infected by the Mold and he is able to regenerate his severed right hand or leg. He also gained bandages on his left hand after two of his fingers were devoured by a Lycan during its first encounter. At the end of the game however, his right hand calcifies after defeating the mutated Miranda knowing that he's dying.
He now wears a yellow hooded coat with a black long sleeved hoodie, dark blue jeans and his black shoes. Later, the right sleeve of his coat and hoodie has a slash design after his right hand being severed by Alcina Dimetrescu's right long claw and enables him to regain his severed right hand to reattach back together by regeneration. His yellow hooded coat was put on his infant daughter, Rosemary Winters while being cradled by Chris before sacrificing himself with a bomb he stole from him. After his death, his yellow hooded coat was later worn by Rose in her teenage years.
In its initial appearance, Ethan is very despondent while living in Dulvey, Louisiana until being captured by the Baker family which are all controlled by Eveline due to the cause of Mold. He is also very close to his wife, Mia Winters. Unlike Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy, Ethan is an inexperience battler which he was seen trying defending himself from any creatures before being killed by Jack Baker and was infected by the Mold. He is shown to support Chris at the end of the game after he gave him the special gun to kill Eveline.
In his final playable appearance in Resident Evil: Village, Ethan resumes his marriage with Mia and displays his fatherly streak to his infant daughter, Rosemary Winters. He is initially vengeful and angry towards Chris after he killed "Mia" not knowing that it was actually Miranda in disguise when Chris finally explains to him later on. He also displays his overprotective side upon mentioning his daughter Rose. This trait is clearly seen when he was horrified after learning from the Duke that the flask he currently carries after defeating the mutated Alcina Dimetrescu is actually the crystallized essence of his infant daughter which Miranda had crystallized her and formed into four flasks to be given by her along with Donna Beneviento, Salvadore Moreau and Karl Heisenberg causing him to angrily throw a fit and with no other options, he decided to retrieved the remaining three flasks by defeating all three of them.
At the near end of the game after learning from Eveline that he himself was truly dead and was infected by the Mold, Ethan resolves to save his daughter from Miranda and after defeating her in a deadly fight, he becomes frail due to his right hand has been calcified knowingly that he is dying and he decided to take a noble sacrifice to save his wife, his daughter and Chris' group by blowing himself up to destroy Miranda and the entire village which was caused by the Fungus Roots from the Megamycete.
Ethan Winters was born in 1984 at Los Angeles, California, where he worked as a systems engineer for an unknown company. At some point, he met and married Mia, with whom he relocated to Texas. Unbeknownst to Ethan, Mia was a researcher and transporter for a criminal bio-weapon R&D company known as the Connections. Mia claimed to be an ambassador for a trading company and occasional babysitter, although Ethan was suspicious of these alibis. In October 2014, Mia embarked on a long-distance trip from which she never returned.
Mia sent out one last video message, tearfully confirming his suspicions of her dishonesty before warning him to stay away. It is not known if he actually received this message.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
On July 18, 2017, when Ethan received an email from Mia's account instructing him to pick her up from the Baker Ranch in Dulvey, Louisiana. Despite his skepticism as to whether or not Mia was truly alive, the mere possibility ate away at him and he resolved to find out for himself. Instead of alerting the authorities, Ethan traveled to the Baker property alone to find his missing wife.
Dark rumors abounded of the old Baker estate ever since its occupants went missing in 2014. Local authorities believed there may have been a connection between the Baker family's disappearance and a spate of missing persons cases that emerged over the next three years - all of them occurring in or near Dulvey, Louisiana. Many believed the house to be haunted. Police officers were frequently sent out to investigate the Bakers' estate, while paranormal documentary webseries Sewer Gators visited the property with the aim of recording an episode there. However, they and most others who entered the premises never returned.
In the late afternoon of July 18, Winters arrived at the Baker ranch. The front gate was locked, forcing Ethan to take a detour into the nearby Guest House, encountering a number of disturbing sights along the way. Just outside the Guest House, he found Mia's purse and driver's license in a pile of burning debris, further reifying Ethan's hope that she may still be alive.
As Ethan entered the Guest House, the door shut and locked behind him (presumably by Jack). Inside this dilapidated and roach-infested residence, he found a videotape documenting the death of Sewer Gators producer Andre Stickland. Venturing into the basement, he discovered Stickland's maggot-riddled corpse floating in the water, along with further evidence that the Bakers were responsible for the disappearance of more than 20 people.
Ethan soon found Mia locked in a prison cell and used bolt cutters to pry the door open. However, she was delirious and unable to recall the events of the past three years. When Ethan mentioned her email instructing him to come get her, she denied sending it. Mia soon urged Ethan to escape with her as "Daddy" was coming on his way down to the basement and urged her husband to follow her out of the house, although the path had long since been boarded up. As Ethan searched for another way out, someone burst through the boarded up wall and kidnapped Mia. Ethan gave chase, but found no sign of Mia upstairs.
Not long after this, Ethan began hearing loud, eerie banging noises emanating from the basement. When he opened the door to the basement, a crazed and infected looking Mia crawled up the steps and attacked her husband, stabbing him repeatedly. Although hesitant, Ethan was forced to defend himself with a nearby axe.
Seconds later, the hallway phone began ringing. Ethan picked up the phone, and the caller introduced herself as Zoe. She urged him to escape through the attic before hanging up. As Ethan made his way to the attic, he quickly noticed that Mia's body had gone missing. A trail of blood led back into the main hallway, where a mysteriously revived Mia ambushed Ethan and cut off his left hand with a chainsaw. Recovering a handgun upstairs, Ethan was forced to kill Mia once more. Trapped in the attic, Ethan attempted to find another way out until he is suddenly ambushed and seemingly knocked out by Jack Baker.
As Ethan drifted in and out of consciousness, Zoe Baker stapled his severed hand back on and placed Mia's Genome Codex on his wrist. Ethan later awoke to find himself strapped to a chair at the dinner table of the main house. Surrounding him were mold-infected mutant members of the Baker family - Jack, Lucas, and Marguerite Baker - alongside an unnamed old woman in a wheelchair. They each appeared to be feasting on mold-infected human organs. Jack attempted to force feed some of these organs to Ethan, but he immediately spat them back out. Marguerite reacted furiously and stormed out the room, while Jack pulled out a knife and began carving Ethan's face.
Before Jack could kill Ethan a second time, Deputy David Anderson arrived and began knocking at the front door, prompting Jack and Lucas to leave the room to go deal with him. Ethan took this opportunity to break free of his bonds and search for a way out of the house. To Ethan's dismay, all of the windows and exits were locked, boarded, taped, or nailed shut. Ethan narrowly escaped Jack by seizing a key from the hallway that allowed him to unlock a hatch door leading to the laundry room, where he was once again contacted by Zoe over the phone.
Exiting the laundry room, Ethan was summoned to the nearby window by Dep. David Anderson. Unfortunately for Ethan, the officer was of little help, instead viewing Ethan as a possible suspect. Ethan begged Anderson to hand him a gun, only to be laughed off and handed a pocket knife. Anderson told him that was all he was going to get before instructing him to make his way to the garage.
Cutting through the tape that sealed the garage door opener, Ethan met with Anderson in the garage. But instead of helping Ethan escape, Anderson aggressively questioned Winters about his presence at the Baker's house before being murdered from behind by Jack. Winters picked up the officer's G17 Handgun and used it on Jack, but the crazed patriarch mostly shrugged his bullets off. Grabbing the car key from the table, Ethan used the vehicle to run Jack over. After being run over a third time, Jack tore the roof off of Ethan's car off and hijacked the wheel, attempting to kill Ethan by driving it into a pile of loose metal scaffolding. However, Ethan missed the scaffolding and survived, whereas Jack was hit in the chest and was seemingly killed.
Ethan exited the car shortly before it caught fire, but Jack was far from finished. Jack stepped out of the burning car, his body engulfed in flames, and charged towards Ethan once again. The car exploded seconds later, briefly incapacitating Jack. Ethan made his way up the ladder only to be grabbed from behind by Jack, who then shot himself through the head with Ethan's gun.
Believing Jack to be dead, Winters made it to the main hall where he was greeted by another phone call from Zoe Baker, who revealed that she was Jack Baker's daughter before telling Ethan to look for keys in the form of three dog head shaped reliefs, as these would help him escape the main house. However, on his hunt for the reliefs, Ethan was ambushed by Jack in the bathroom. Since he was still recovering from his gunshot wound, Jack's brain was visibly exposed. The Baker patriarch continued chasing Ethan throughout the house as the latter searched for the keys he needed to escape. Winters's search led him into the basement where he first encountered the Molded, and eventually arrived in the dissection room where one of the marble dog head reliefs was lying on a shelf. However, Jack grabbed it first and placed it on a hook in the drawing room to act as bait for Winters, and once the relief was in Winters's possession, Jack kicked him down into the area below, initiating a vicious close-quarters duel which ended in Winters completely destroying Jack's entire upper body, killing him as far as Winters could expect.
After acquiring all the dog heads and escaping the main house, Winters made it to Zoe's trailer, once again being phoned by her. Impressed with his progress so far, Zoe explained her dire situation to him - her entire family, including herself and Mia, were 'contaminated' and needed some sort of serum to cure themselves. Believing that her mother Marguerite may have hidden some in the Old House, Zoe instructed Winters to start the search there. While investigating the area, Winters briefly reunited with Mia on the other side of a chain-link fence and started to question her about what she knew despite her amnesia, but Lucas appeared from behind Mia and kidnapped her. Once Winters got the Crow Key and headed towards the second floor, Marguerite ambushed him and threw him down a flight of stairs. The impact of his fall caused the wooden floor beneath Winters to break and send him plummeting down a hole in the ground, leaving him at the mercy of Marguerite and her mutant bugs. Winters retaliated by shooting at Marguerite from the hole, eventually weakening her to the point where she stumbled and fell into the pit, allowing Winters to climb back up from the hole.
On the second floor, Winters discovered the mummified corpse of a "D-Series" child, the basis of the serum. However, he was unable to enter the area where the D-Series arm was stored, as it could only be accessed with Marguerite's lantern. Winters returned to the pit where he fought Marguerite, only to find that she had escaped with the lantern through a hidden tunnel. Winters followed the tunnel and arrived at an old greenhouse, where he was confronted by a grotesque, mutated Marguerite, but he defeated her causing her to calcify and crumble to pieces, revealing the lantern inside of her. Winters picked up her lantern and used it to access and grab the D-Series arm from the old house.
After agreeing to meet Zoe back at her trailer, Winters was instead contacted by Lucas, who had managed to capture her. He told Winters that the D-Series head could be earned back if he agreed to participate in an "activity" he put together, and before hanging up, Lucas urged Winters to look in the fridge which contained Anderson's now decapitated and partially mutated head along with a note saying, "The pig is waiting for you in the dissection room, bitch". Winters backtracked to the dissection room in the basement of the Main House, and found the body of the beheaded Anderson with a sign saying "Prove you're a real man and stick your hand down this pig's throat!". He reluctantly did so, feeling sorry for the deputy, and pulled out the Snake Key which Lucas explained would help him find the two key cards he needed to join the "party" in the barn. After managing to get his hands on both key cards, Winters was finally able to enter the barn.
Once inside, Winters sat down in front of a TV and was greeted by Lucas who proved that he had the D-Series head and refused to give it up. As Winters progressed further into the barn, he realized that it had been rigged full of traps by Lucas, who gloated over various speakers throughout the complex. After successfully evading several Molded assaults, Winters made his way into a puzzle room which Lucas intended to be impossible to solve - however, he outsmarted Lucas and made him retreat, leaving behind the D-Series head but not before issuing one final threat to Winters through the monitor system.
Once arriving at the Boathouse and finding Mia and Zoe, Winters freed the two women and gave the serum ingredients to Zoe to make the final product, intending to use a docked boat as an escape. However, as Winters grabbed the two serum samples Zoe had created, a heavily mutated Jack burst through the building and grabbed him, forcing a final showdown between the two. Winters managed to take out the many eyes covering Jack's body, and even though this alone was not enough to keep him down, a quick suggestion from Zoe led Winters to inject Jack with one of the serums in desperation, causing him to rapidly calcify. With one remaining serum left, Winters made the difficult choice of curing his own wife Mia over Zoe.
Despite telling Zoe that he would help her, she angrily ordered him to leave with Mia on the boat. As the two propelled their boat through the bayou, Winters and Mia stumbled upon the wreckage of the tanker Annabelle, but were soon stopped and thrown from the boat by Eveline's Mold, capsizing it to prevent Winters and Mia from leaving the Baker family's residence. Once Mia awoke and started desperately searching for Winters, she found him lying on the ground unconscious, but he was then quickly taken away by the Mold further into the wreckage.
During his imprisonment within the Mold, Winters had a vision where he talked to a calm, sane Jack Baker sitting alongside his daughter Zoe. Jack explained to Winters that none of the family were truly psychotic killers, but rather Eveline had taken control of their minds and mutated them into monsters, pleading to him to 'free' his family. Mia eventually rescued Winters from the Mold, quickly handing him a tissue sample from Eveline and shutting herself off from him before she was overtaken by the infection once again, telling him to "go kill that little bitch".
Winters promptly exited the ship and ventured out to the Abercrombie Salt Mine, where he witnessed the arrival of Blue Umbrella forces and eventually came across a lab with the necessary equipment to craft the E-Necrotoxinrequired to kill Eveline. He then fought his way through the mines and found a passage that led him back inside the Bakers' Guest House, and as he wandered the home he suffered flashbacks of the events that had occurred there previously. Winters finally confronted Eveline and injected her with the E-Necrotoxin despite her best efforts to force him back, stopping her hallucinations and revealing her true form as the wheelchair-bound "grandma" of the Baker family. As the decrepit woman broke down in tears, her body rapidly followed suit, decaying in seconds until she was one with the Mold beneath Winters's feet. For a moment it seemed as if Winters had finally put an end to Eveline, but she then commandeered all of the Mold in the Baker residence, returning as a gargantuan, eldritch and very enraged abomination bent on Winters's destruction.
Forced to fight one last time for his life, Winters unloaded all the weaponry he had into Eveline, but to no avail, being thrown around constantly by her. Suddenly, the Blue Umbrella helicopters dropped him a crate containing the Albert-01 loaded with RAMRODs, urging him to use it via his codex. Winters did so and after a few shots, finally calcified and killed Eveline once and for all. The Umbrella units then began to drop down and secure the area, with one of the soldiers removing his helmet and Chris Redfield finally introduced himself by his surname Redfield before helping Winters up. On the helicopter out, Winters happily reunited with Mia once more before leaving the Baker Estate for good.
After escaping, they are eventually interrogated by the BSAA and they decided to move the Winters into an Eastern European country for fear that they are still the target that the crime syndicate is still after, Winters is initially surprised by this and he demands to speak to his wife about it. After debating, they are eventually consent with the decision.
At some point after his escape, Winters informed Chris and Blue Umbrella about Zoe. After Joe rescued her and the pair were both recovered by Blue Umbrella, Chris contacted Winters and let him talk to Zoe, reaffirming to her that he kept his promise to send help.
Resident Evil 8: Village
This is Ethan's final playable appearance in this game and Chris also became a brief playable character in the same game after he was brutally incapacitated by Miranda until he returns to battle Miranda at the end.
3 years and 8 months after the events of the Baker House Incident, Ethan and Mia have settled into a peaceful life and moved to Europe courtesy of Chris and have together conceived a daughter named Rosemary. Ethan also takes part in military training in better preparation to defend his family should they meet with threats again. On February 2, 2021, they celebrated Rose's half birthday. On the 6th, he and Mia began to argue when he brought up the Baker House Incident as he felt a part of him still trapped there. On a fateful night, he expresses his concern over his wife Mia telling Rose a local fairy tale named Village of Shadows. She then sarcastically ask him to put his daughter to bed. He complies and takes her to her bed cradle; on the way he thinks how everyone had quickly forgotten the Baker Incident. When she is preparing for dinner, Ethan notes her as someone who had gone full native. Mia then tells Ethan to stop worrying, and he notes recent events moving fast. He and his wife then have an argument, Ethan accusing his wife of forgetting everything that had happened in Louisiana. Mia is then shot in the shoulder by an unseen assailant. Ethan quickly tells her to get down but she is shot multiple times before seemingly being killed by Chris, much to Ethan's horror. When they are ordered to take them out of the house, a member of Chris's Hound Wolf Squadgives Rose to Chris, with Ethan furiously asking Chris what he was doing to his daughter. Ethan plans to attack Chris but before he can do so he is knocked unconscious. He is dragged out of the house on Chris's orders. Ethan recalls a time he argued with Mia about their fears over Rosemary's true nature and the effects she might have inherited from the both of them. Their argument ends when he answers a call from his job.
Ethan awakens at his overturned convoy, with the guards dead and Rosemary nowhere to be seen. He picks up a nearby ringing phone where he demands the caller to divulge Chris's and Rose's location, only to be denied an answer. He then sets off to a nearby trail filled with blood and dead carcasses. He then stumbles on to an old shack and starts to explore the nearby surroundings. He comes across a large Village, which he finds recently deserted.
He encounters a villager, Grigori, hiding and armed with a shotgun. He interrogates Ethan, but before Ethan can respond, the house is surrounded by werewolf-like creatures known as Lycans. Grigori offers a handgun to Ethan before he is killed by a Lycan, while Ethan is dragged down to the basement by another Lycan. Landing in a pile of villager corpses, a Lycan attacks and bites his left pinkie and ring fingers off. He kills the Lycan and escapes the basement, entering another house. There, he is attacked by a horde of Lycans. Surviving a wave of the monsters, he overhears a radio transmission telling any survivors to come to Luiza's house. However, upon exiting the house, a large pack of Lycans led by the large Uriaș converge on him. Before they can kill him, the bells at the castle ring and the horde runs off.
He then comes across an old woman, who asks if he was the "child's father"; when he confirms this, the woman proclaims that after Rosemary was brought to the village by the village deity Mother Miranda, they have "fallen into darkness" and warns him that she is in great danger. Ethan sees the nearby castle and surmises that he might find Rose there. Eventually, he comes across two surviving villagers, Elena and her injured father, Leonardo, who are hoping to join the rest of the survivors at Luiza's House but no one is letting them in. As the Lycans start to lurk nearby, Ethan manages to climb over Luiza's house and open the gate for Elena and Leonardo before sealing it. Although they are given a cold welcome by a hesitant Iulian, the group is welcomed into the home by Luiza.
Luiza then guides him to the house, meeting other survivors: the drunken Anton, the mourning Roxana, and the crippled Sebastian. Ethan asks if this is all that remains from the village and Anton angrily responds that there is no one left before insulting the survivors and chastising Luiza for letting in the injured Leonardo and Ethan, an outsider. Luiza responds that her house has been protecting her family for generations and that she reassures him that all are welcome and safe in there. When Ethan asks what is going on around the area, she tells him that they were once a quiet devout village, but then the monsters came and attacked them. Elena asks where Luiza's husband is, to which she answers that he went outside to get help. Roxana then suggests for them to pray to Mother Miranda for his safety, they all join hands and pray; Ethan notices the prayer reminded him of the old woman's words. Leonardo calls the old woman crazy, but Luiza instead believes it is through the woman's devotion that she is still alive.
Suddenly, Leonardo roars in pain before attacking and killing Luiza with his machete, as well as knocking over a lantern that causes a fire. Ethan beckons Elena to escape as Leonardo, exhibiting Lycan abilities, kills the rest of the survivors. Leonardo pounces at Ethan before Elena fires at her father with a shotgun blast. As the two escape to the garage, Elena mourns her father as Ethan manages to get Luiza's truck working in hopes to ram their way outside. When he instead crashes the car, the two decide the escape upwards to the attic, where Elena warns Ethan that the castle is "nothing but blood and death."
Leonardo, somehow still alive, manages to climb upward and calls out to Elena in pain. Despite Ethan's warnings, Elena quickly runs to him when the wooden plank providing her way back collapses, separating the two. Leonardo falls through to the fire. Despite Ethan offering help, Elena tells him to go and to save his daughter before the floor collapses and she falls into the fiery depths below. Ethan leaves the burning house through a window and frustratingly notes that people keep dying around him. He steps outside only to witness Mother Miranda killing Iulian; after pursuing her, he then encounters the old woman from before who happily states that death has visited them all. He manages to open the stone door leading to the Castle using two crests found around the village.
Ethan heads to the castle but is captured by a man with electromagnetic powers before he can enter. The man drags him to meeting with Mother Miranda and four other “lords”: Lady Alcina Dimitrescu, Donna Beneviento, Salvatore Moreau, and his captor Karl Heisenberg. Dimitrescu and Heisenberg argue who should have him, with her wanting to kill Ethan, offering his blood to Miranda, and Heisenberg wanting to put on an entertaining show for everyone to enjoy. Miranda decides that Ethan's fate belongs to Heisenberg. He begins counting down from ten as Ethan jumps down a hole in the corner of the room. He narrowly avoids Lycans and traps and manages to escape.
Making his way out of the trap tunnel, he arrives in front of Dimitrescu's castle. There he meets The Duke, a merchant who offers him weapons and supplies (in exchange for Lei) for his journey ahead. As he enters the castle in hopes of finding Rose, he is captured by Dimitrescu's daughters Bela, Cassandra, and Daniela. They drag him to meet their mother, who is surprised that he survived Heisenberg's game. She orders them to hang Ethan up by hooking both of his hands. After this, Dimitrescu goes to inform Miranda of Ethan’s survival. While they are gone, he manages to free himself by forcefully ripping his hands through the hook. After traversing through areas of the castle, he comes across The Duke, conveniently settled in room in the castle. The Duke suggests that Dimitrescu is keeping Rose in her private chambers somewhere in the castle.
As Ethan explores the castle, he encounters Cassandra, who attacks him. He narrowly escapes by jumping down a shaft, and crawls to the castle’s wine tasting room. From there, he passes through the castle's dungeon, where he fights off several mutated women known as Moroaicǎ. Arriving back at the main floor of the castle, Ethan is attacked and caught by Bela. Ethan attempts to shoot her, but his bullets do nothing. Instead, a stray shot breaks a window, letting in the cold winter air. Bela, horrified by what he has done, becomes vulnerable to Ethan’s attacks. He manages to kill the weakened Bela, who calcifies and crumbles to the ground.
Ethan makes his way through the castle, solving more puzzles and battling various Moroaicǎ, before overhearing a conversation between Dimitrescu and Miranda on the phone. Dimitrescu demands Miranda's permission to kill Ethan as he has already killed one of her daughters, though Miranda refuses and orders that he stay alive to participate in an upcoming 'ceremony'. However, after the call ends, Dimitrescu throws her vanity in frustration, and decides to kill Ethan anyway. He sneaks in to her chambers and finds the Dimitrescu key, but is caught by the Lady. She proceeds to violently slam him against the floor, causing it to break and send him to the dungeons below. He navigates the dungeon and eventually finds the exit door’s switch, but gets his hand sliced off by Dimitrescu's sharp claws. Evading her attacks, he retrieves his hand and escapes the dungeon. He is later cornered by Cassandra in the arsenal room, but manages to weaken her by throwing a pipe bomb to a cracked exterior wall. The chilly winter air enters the room and Ethan is able to kill Cassandra. Eventually, he is captured by Daniela in the library. There, he is able to open the skylight and let the wind in to weaken and kill her.
Ethan learns of a weapon called the Dagger of Death's Flowers, which is imbued with poisons from around Europe. He finds it sealed away with the corpse of the last man who attempted to use it against Dimitrescu. The Lady then appears behind him, and stabs him with her claws. In retaliation, he stabs her with the dagger. Dimitrescu becomes furious and throws him through a window, causing the dagger to be lost after it falls off the tower of the castle. Enraged, Dimitrescu mutates into a grotesque dragon-like creature. The two battle atop one of the castle’s towers until Ethan emerges victorious, and Lady Dimitrescu’s mutated body calcifies. At the base of a tower, he finds a dirty flask and heads to a nearby cave.
There he meets the old woman again chanting the same prayers as before. Ethan demands she tell him what is going on and where Miranda took Rose. She laughs, telling him that Rose will be sacrificed as a life for a life. She points out that the crest of the four families may open a path that he seeks. Ethan stares at the emblem, eerily similar to the logo of the Umbrella Corporation.
He then travels to the Altar, where he meets the Duke once more. Duke then notices he had picked something value and when Ethan shows it to him, he claims that he is holding Rose right in his hands. He then, horrified, realizes that he is holding his own daughter's head inside the flask. Duke clarifies that Rose can be saved; he then points him to a house with a red chimney on the western side of the Village, Ethan is reluctant to go but does so as he has run out of options, but promises to kill the Duke if he is lying. Sometime later, Ethan returns with the four-winged key. Duke then tells him to use it and save his daughter by collecting Rose's remaining flasks and that each of them is guarded by the 3 remaining Houses that served under Miranda.
He first heads into House Beneviento. On his way, he begins hallucinating, the hallucination caused by Beneviento's Cadou mutation, and sees Mia, who is holding their daughter Rose, beckoning and leading him to the location. He arrives and starts to explore around the house hoping to find the second flask. He finds the flask sitting on the doll Angie but before he could grab it, the doll disappears and so are his weapons. He then comes to find a doll similar to Mia and with a photo of her corpse. Ethan begins to solve in order to find a way out. During the journey, he picks up a phone call from Mia, who tells him that she didn't want to keep "it" a secret from him and she doesn't want to lose him or their family; he tries to get a response from her but fails. Each time he successfully solves parts of the puzzles, the radio nearby picks up a transmission from Mia and each grows more distressed. During his journey, he is pursued by a grotesque baby that emits Rose's crying. He manages to reach the main floor of the house, where he is greeted by Donna, before she pleads with him not to leave and sends the other dolls to attack him. He manages to repel them and Angie demands he find her quickly in a game of hide and seek before he gets attacked by the other dolls.
Each time he finds her, he stabs her and her taunting grows more with each find. Ethan manages to stab and kill Angie but it is later revealed that he is actually stabbing Donna in the eye and that the doll is now lifeless. The wound causes her body to become calcified and it crumbles as Ethan determines that he is going to make things right with Mia and claims another feather key and the second flask. He then sets off to the reservoir.
When he arrives at the reservoir, he obtains the third flask which is initially unnoticed by Salvatore at first. When he turns around thinking it was Miranda, he finds out that it's Ethan instead. Salvatore then asks what he was going to do with Miranda's "special child" and he angrily exclaims that Rose was not hers. He then asks what it means, Salvatore responds that she wants her baby back. He pleads with Ethan if he could just hold onto it just for a little longer. He starts to cry but the cries soon turns to laughter when he chastises Ethan for talking too much and he reveals he has plugged the way in with bubble filled acid. Ethan then navigates his way around the reservoir and uses a boat to get across to a tent filled with tech equipment, being used as a research outpost. He is soon ambushed by a member of the Houndwolf squad and finally meets Mia's killer Chris, who is surprised that he had made it this far. Ethan then angrily exclaims that he had killed Mia and he should just kill him to finish his job. Another squad member comes out, informing Chris that they have been getting serious motion readings and suggests that they should move on, fearing that Miranda knows they're here. When Ethan hears her name, he demands Chris tell him how they were involved but he rejects saying that he should leave it alone. Ethan overhears that they have also been doing sample analysis and it's related to the Mold. They then noticed the mutated fish was heading their way, Chris demands Ethan to stay out of their business but before he can answer, the creature attacks and Chris pushes Ethan to safety before the two got separated by the creature.
The creature drags Ethan away but he manages to escape its grasp and climb on the plank. Salvatore also climbs on the plank, this time revealing the hideous mutation beneath the cloth. Salvatore tells Ethan that the exit's underwater and that he can't escape, and Miranda is preparing for the ceremony. Salvatore then begins to puke green substances and mutates, falling underwater, bonding with the mutated fish. Ethan then sets off to open the dam and drain the water, he manages to traverse through the fragile planks and stays dry. He restores the power which lies on Windmill One, he finally opens the dam and drain the water and along with the mutated creature. Ethan then proceeds to battle Salvatore and dodges his acid filled attacks; after a while, he manages to kill him with Ethan commenting that he was as disgusting in death as he was in life. Ethan then grabs another part of the feathers key and sees a broadcast by Heisenberg through a TV nearby. Heisenberg commends him on his fighting spirit and offers his assistance to him. He directs Ethan to the stronghold and grabs his fourth and final flask, he tells him to go back to the graveyard.
Ethan puts all of them in the altar and carries the Giant's chalice to the other pedestal where it descends down and opens up to Heisenberg's factory. He gets inside and is greeted by Karl, who tells Ethan that he is being tested to see if he is strong enough to be part of Miranda's family, Ethan angrily exclaims that he doesn't want to be a part of her family and neither did Karl. He also says that even Miranda was scared of how potentially dangerous Rose is. He then offers Ethan to go together and save Rose and use her to kill Miranda. Ethan rejects his offer saying that his daughter is not a weapon for his usurping scheme. Heisenberg then kicks Ethan down to the bottom of his factory.
Ethan is then chased around by Sturm, a creature with its entire body made up of propeller fans. He manages to evade it but finds himself deeper into the factory where he fights off several creatures wearing and gearing metal gears. He navigates around the factory, intending to get upstairs to escape. After solving some puzzles on the way and turning the backup generator on, Heisenberg displays his disappointment towards Ethan through the microphone and explains that she forcefully takes the others as her children, locks them up away in the village and decades of servitude. While the others have no problem with Miranda, Heisenberg wants to be free from her so he needs immense power to destroy her. Miranda had always treated them as nothing but her children, she had never cared for them and has long since lost all of her humanity and if she started the ceremony with Rose then it would be over for her and the village alike. He assures him that he would use Rose to fulfil his cause.
Shortly afterwards he is pursued again by Sturm, he proceeds to evade and battle it, using its weak point to his advantage, Ethan finally kills it. After reaching topside, he is attacked by Heisenberg's electromagnetic abilities and is dropped the ground again. After he crawls through a vent, he is alerted by noises and is subdued and disarmed by Chris, who has infiltrated the factory and is in a middle of planting explosives beneath it. Chris tells him to stay away but Ethan angrily exclaims that he killed Mia but Chris starts to explain that the Mia he shot back there has never been the real Mia but in fact Miranda the entire time, who is a bioweapon and has the ability to change her cells and mimic the person but doesn't have the former's memories. Ethan angrily demanded to know why he was never informed of this only for Chris to shout that Ethan would want to be involved. Ethan asks him to explain everything.
Chris explains that Miranda herself is insane and that the monsters and village was her life's work—her experimentation with the Mold itself. Ethan sulked realizing it's just like that of Dulvey, Louisiana and that he can't save his family nor he can do anything. Chris then tosses him his phone, asking him to look in the pictures. In one of the pictures, Ethan realizes that Miranda has the possession of all four flasks and Chris's men are still monitoring the situation. Ethan wants to save Rose immediately but Chris tells him that he cant go up against Miranda herself. Chris advises him to take Heisenberg's self propelled artillery and meet him topside while he finishes planting explosives. Chris promises Ethan that they will together get his daughter back. Chris then lastly asks him to stay under the radar.
He takes the artillery and rides the elevator up to the surface, he faces against the mutated Heisenberg, who is now a creature that is fused with metal parts. After an intensive battle, Heisenberg overturns the artillery and he is about to kill Ethan until he is momentarily distracted from the explosion in the factory. Ethan is forced to fight him head on with the weapons he has. Heisenberg then uses his ability again in an attempt to kill Ethan but Ethan manages to get to the artillery and fires a grenade shot, killing Karl.
Ethan is then called by Chris, who heard an intense explosion from above. He informs him that he has killed Karl and that he is going take Rose back from Miranda. Chris tells him not to go without him and tells him to wait. Ethan is momentarily distracted by the sound of Rose's crying; he turns around to see "Mia" walking towards him and says that Rose is important to her and chastises him for never knowing that she had taken Mia's place. "Mia" is then warped to Miranda, and she begins to tell him about Eveline's power over the Mold and Rose is her successor, her true complete form, and that she will grow up to control the masses and that she must have her. Miranda says that the Fungus Root catalogues all of them and Rose will be reborn as her daughter Eva. Miranda then begins to shift through several forms including that of the crazy old hag. Ethan angrily tells her to come out and face him only for his heart to be ripped out by Miranda who appeared below him, she tells him that he will be a part of the Fungus Root's records.
In limbo, Eveline suddenly appears in Ethan's vision. Eveline mockingly asks him if he had ever questioned why, despite all the fatal injuries he had suffered both at the Baker residence and in the Village, he had always completely recovered. Eveline explains that back at the Baker guest house after he had defeated the Molded Mia for the last time and Jack Baker knocked him unconscious, the head stomp had actually killed him. However, the Mold in the Baker residence had managed to revive him and mutated him as well, thus giving him the same inhuman regenerative abilities as Mia and the Bakers. Although initially in despair, Ethan resolved to save Rose, even if it's the last thing he's going to do.
It was revealed that he survived the attack from Miranda due to his regenerative capabilities thanks to the Mold. Ethan wakes up in the Duke's carriage to find Rose and end Miranda once and for all. The Duke takes Ethan to the village where he finds Miranda with Rose, believing she is her daughter, Eva.
Ethan confronts Miranda, as much to her surprise. Ethan demands she give back Rose, with Miranda threatening him, only for Chris to intervene and shoot her in the head, giving Ethan an opportunity to take back Rose. Miranda however, grabs hold of Rose before the Fungus Root spreads around the area, mutating her further.
After a long battle, Ethan strikes a killing blow to Miranda, causing her to yell her daughter's name before calcifying as the barrier around them starts to dissipate as well. Ethan takes his daughter back, only to fall onto his knees in weakness after his right hand calcifies. Chris finds a frail Ethan, assisting them to their safety. Chris informs Ethan of a bomb that will obliterate the entire village and how Mia is actually alive waiting for him. After leaving some tearful parting words to both Rose and Chris, along with his bloodied jacket to cover his daughter, Ethan then gives Rose to Chris before stealing the bomb's trigger as he pushes them when tree root-like Mold grows to surround the area.
As one final moment to destroy the Fungus Root, Ethan activates the trigger, eventually sacrificing himself as the bomb destroys both the Fungus Root and the entire village. His death brought grief to both Mia and Chris.
Years later, his daughter Rose, now a teenager, visited the cemetery with the epitaph "a kind husband and loving father who puts family before all else" written on her father's grave. An agent who was waiting nearby took note that she is a lot like her father, which she took as a compliment.
