Carrier Air Wing, released in Japan as U.S. Navy (ユー・エス・ネイビー, Yū Esu Neibī?), is a 1990 side scrolling shooting game released for the CP System arcade hardware by Capcom. It is the spiritual sequel to U.N. Squadron, released during the previous year. As with the original, players chose any one of three different jet fighters and battle their way through ten enemy-packed stages. Another idea carried over from U.N. Squadron is the shop, which allows players to buy weapon and shield upgrades for their jet fighter. Designed by Noritaka Funamizu.

Gameplay

Carrier Air Wing plays much like it's predecessor, with the player choosing between three jet fighters and being able to purchase weapons and power ups between stages. The fuel gauge now works much like in 1943: The Battle of Midway, constantly depleting during the stage, though fuel replenishment items are much more plentiful in this title.

Aircraft

 • F/A-18 Hornet - The most balanced aircraft available. It can handle air-to-air and air-to-ground sorties.
 • F-14 Tomcat - Dedicated air-to-air fighter. Not as capable in air-to-ground combat but it is a formidable fighter.
 • A-6 Intruder - Principle ground attack aircraft. It is not well suited for air-to-air.

Plot

Japanese Version

In 1997, a local war broke out in various countries triggered by the invasion of Far East J country by X country. According to confidential information from the United States intelligence, a death merchant organization called "Rabu" is behind the war by supplying the latest weapons to X country. The United States, which judged that the supply of weapons had to be cut off in order to stop this war, appointed the Navy nuclear aircraft carrier "Carl Vinson " to take down Rabu.

Western Version

The 1990s was a decade of great change marked by growing friendships between old enemies and never before seen levels of co-operation between powerful nations of the world. However, in 1999, using new weapons designed in secrecy, the Middle Eastern country of Rabu threatened to destroy this fragile peace, striking Tokyo with it's many weapons. The Americans decide to fight back against Rabu, and the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) slips out to sea carrying three of the finest Navy fighter pilots in the world, launching them on a campaign to remove the threat of Rabu and bring peace and freedom back to the world.
