The CP System III, abbreviated as CPS-3, is the successor to Capcom's CP System II.
It uses a CD-based setup paired with a security cartridge (dongle) that loads game data into the system. Much like the CPS-2, it remained a heavily secured platform until it was eventually reverse-engineered—long after its commercial life had ended.
CPS-3 ultimately became Capcom’s final proprietary arcade hardware. The system reportedly encountered numerous technical and production issues, which contributed to its short lifespan and limited adoption despite its technological advancements.

Trivia[]
- Street Fighter III 2nd Impact was encrypted using the same cipher method found in already-“dead” CPS-3 cartridges. As a result, it was immune to the system’s cartridge-suicide issue, making it the only CPS-3 title that never required a revival process.
- This game was also the one that officially supported widescreen resolution, with other games partially implementing it, or not at all.
