Bela Dimitrescu

Bela Dimitrescu is a secondary antagonist and boss in the 2021 horror video game, Resident Evil Village. She is a noblewoman who was turned into a mutant by Alcina Dimitrescu and Mother Miranda, becoming an insectoid organism that passed on the form of Bela post transformation. She was adopted by Alcina Dimitrescu, along with two other girls named Daniela and Cassandra. Becoming the eldest daughter of Alcina and elder sister of Cassandra and Daniela Dimitrescu, Bela lives in Dimitrescu Castle and likes to consume human blood, like her family

She is voiced by Bekka Prewitt in English and Rie Tanaka in Japanese

Personality[]

Bela initially presents herself as the most serene and level-headed of the three sisters. She is cunning and cold, often mocking her victims with a monotone that denotes clear superiority. Her carefree attitude and disdain for disorder make her appear the most stable of the trio. She enjoys the game of cat and mouse, taunting her prey with an air of boredom and arrogance, as seen when she mocks Ethan, calling him "little one."

However, this facade of composure completely vanishes when confronted with her vulnerability to the cold. Once the freezing air enters the room, her personality changes drastically. From being serene, she becomes furious and sadistic. She screams in anger and frustration, and her tone becomes much more cruel. She is seen expressing her rage, lamenting that the cold is weakening her and attacking Ethan with unbridled violence. In this state, he loses all traces of self-control, revealing a much more brutal and spiteful nature.

Appearance[]

Bela has blonde hair, yellow eyes, very pale, she wears drained mascara around her eyes, blood around her mouth like a smile, and she is a tall woman, standing a half a head taller than Ethan with heels on, Similar to her sisters, she wears a long hooded black dress and a cloak behind her back and a flower tattoo on her forehead in the sign of House Dimitrescu.

Past[]

At an unknown time in the early 20th century, Bela lived under a different name in a rural village in Eastern Europe. After the mysterious Mother Miranda took control and began infecting the villagers with a mutamycete, only four chosen people survived, including Alcina Dimitrescu, the mistress of Dimitrescu Castle. One day, Bela was captured by Alcina Dimitrescu and Mother Miranda and experimented on with an insect similar to the blowfly. The insectoids were insects that hatched from eggs planted by the Cadou parasite. The insectoids consumed Bela's corpse and those of two other women, Daniela and Cassandra, managing to mimic human anatomy and assuming Bela's form after being consumed.

This created three new creatures, who eventually opened their eyes and were adopted as daughters by the Dimitrescu maids. Dimitrescu named them Bela, Cassandra, and Daniela. From then on, the three lived as a family in her mother's castle and shared the immeasurable thirst for human blood inherited from their "mother." This caused immense suffering for the castle maids, who were sent to the basement for the slightest offense, where they were tortured and bled to death, as well as visitors or strangers who entered the castle

Not being human, the sisters did not age. Furthermore, they were resistant to physical attacks, as the flies could disintegrate and recombine. The swarm's existence also allowed them to abandon their human form and move as a pure swarm, capable of resuming their human forms. The swarm's only weakness was sudden drops in temperature; below 10°C, the flies would freeze, causing the human body to solidify and become vulnerable to attack. Hence, the sisters never leave the castle, and Alcina ordered the maids to close all the castle windows.  

Resident Evil Village[]

In 2021, the sisters' daily lives take an unexpected turn when a stranger, Ethan Winters, appears at the castle looking for his daughter, Rose, kidnapped by Mother Miranda. At the beginning of his journey, just as he is about to open a door, the three sisters appear behind him in a cloud of flies and approach menacingly. Bela knocks Ethan to the ground and plunges her sickle into his leg, allowing her to drag Ethan away. The three floating sisters drag him to their mother's room to proudly present their capture to Alcina Dimitrescu. After Dimitrescu tastes Ethan's blood, the sisters want to devour him, but his mother tells them she must inform Mother Miranda first, but promises the sisters that the three will taste Ethan's blood afterward.

To prevent Ethan from escaping, the sisters hang him by his hands from hooks in the ceiling. They then leave the room, only to discover shortly afterward that Ethan has managed to free himself and escape. The sisters then begin searching for Ethan throughout the castle to capture him and drink his blood. Bela finally locates Ethan in the dungeon after he escapes from Cassandra. Bela manifests near him and chases him through the dungeon; since she cannot harm Bela's body, escape is her only option. Ethan eventually reaches a dead end near the kitchen via a staircase, where he attempts to escape by tearing wooden planks from the wall that block his way.

By then, however, Bela has reached him and pushed him through the planks into the next room. She immediately lunges at Ethan, who desperately attempts to shoot her at with his pistol. He misses but fires at the window, causing cold air to rush into the kitchen and weaken Bela. Angrily, she attempts to kill Ethan, but he eventually manages to defeat her.

Gameplay[]

Bela appears only in the basement of the castle after Ethan falls down there trying to escape from Cassandra. She pursues him through the different chambers, inflicting persistent damage from swarm she is a part of when she gets too close. If she gets within range, she can lunge towards Ethan and bite at his neck. She cannot be harmed and must simply be fled from; however, dealing sufficient damage to her will make her dissipate, giving the player a few seconds of breathing room.

When Ethan fights against Bela just outside the Kitchen, her exposure to the cold severely weakens her strength. Unable to transform into her swarm form, she resorts to instead using her sickle weapon in a mad frenzy to kill Ethan, but is able to be hurt by Ethan's arsenal. On the Village of Shadows difficulty, a few Moroaică will spawn and assist Bela in her boss fight.

Trivia[]

  • Bela's name is a possible reference to Bela Lugosi, who played Count Dracula in the titular 1931 film.
  • Bela seems to dislike messes, having noted in the dungeon that Cassandra left one; prior to chasing Ethan.
  • Bela and her sisters are likely a reference to Count Dracula's Brides as there are three of them and they all have vampire like abilities
  • As with all the Dimitrescu sisters, a crystalline torso can be recovered from Bela's remains after the battle.
  • Bela can be identified by her blonde hair, a red pendant on her neck, a little bit of eyeshadow, drained mascara and blood around the mouth like a smile
